What is Bento? And more answers to many Bento related questions.

What is Bento?

Bento(弁当) or Obento(お弁当), is a Japanese version of a lunch in a box. You can choose to put any types of food or use any type of container, basically anything can go into a Bento. Bento are a practical, tasty and healthy way to bring your lunch with you during your busy day.





Are there different types of Bento?

There are many different varieties of Bento, with a range of different purposes.

There's you're plain, regular Bento, which most people will take with them to work or school. 

There's also a very popular type of Bento, called Kyaraben (meaning 'cute Bento'). These Bento are typically extremely elaborate, and take a lot of time to prepare, but the gorgeous, art-like results are breathtaking. These Bento are usually prepared by mothers for their children or hobbyists.



Other types of Bento you may encounter:

Makunouchi Bento, this type is more of an elaborate Bento meal, presented in a formal way, and is meant to be eaten at the table. This is the type of Bento you would see served in restaurants.




Kouraku Bento, are Picnic-style Bento and are meant to be shared among a larger group of people, typically outside and during special events or festivals.




Ekiben, are Bento prepared and sold to travelers at stations, department stores and at Konbini (Convenience Stores).
